Lou Mitchell Courtneys' classical art education was in painting and sculpting, concentrating on landscape and the human figure. She graduated from the North Carolina School of the Arts with a major in Visual Art and from U.N.C. Greensboro with a B.F.A. in design. In Hawaii she painted miniature paintings on Mother of Pearl. She later spent seven years in the furniture industry, designing and building over 250 original sculptural prototypes for the companies Lane, Basset Glass, Thomasville (Four Corners Collection) and Casa Bique, among others. During that time she was a member of the American Society of Furniture Designers.
John King is a fine woodworker who understands construction materials and techniques, essential to the construction of large scale architectural ceramics and their installation.Together & individually, Lou Mitchell and John have created numerous custom Architectural Ceramics. ELEMENTS is an award-winning design, fabrication and installation firm specializing in architectural ceramics including handmade sinks, murals, bar facings, fireplaces, fountains, sconces and original art tiles.
In 2012 Lou Mitchell Courtney was chosen to create an outdoor sculpture for the city of Gulf Breeze Florida's 50th anniversary celebration. Titled 'Starlight', the 22 foot high stainless steel sculpture, is located at Woodland Park. Go to ArtforGulf Breeze.com website for more details.
